## Key features

- PLANT, NOT PLASTIC — a whole loofah gourd, sun-dried and cut by hand. Nothing synthetic in it, and it goes on the compost heap when you are finished.
- SOFTENS IN WARM WATER — firm and scratchy dry, pillow-soft the moment it is wet, then firm again as it dries. That drying is what stops it going sour the way a plastic sponge does.
- USES A FRACTION OF THE SOAP — the open fibre works up a lather from a sliver of a bar, so a bathing bar lasts noticeably longer with one of these than without.
- STITCHED TO HOLD ITS SHAPE — cotton thread right through, so the heart does not flatten into a disc after a fortnight.
- LASTS MONTHS, NOT WEEKS — rinse, squeeze and hang it where air can reach it. Replace every 4–6 weeks for face use, longer for body.

## Description

A whole loofah gourd, dried and cut into a heart by hand, then stitched with cotton so it keeps its shape wet.

The fibre softens the moment it meets warm water and firms up again as it dries, which is what stops it going sour the way a plastic sponge does. Hang it up between showers and it will see you through months of use, then go on the compost heap.

## Questions

### How long does a natural loofah last?

Four to six weeks for face use and two to three months for body use, if you rinse it after each use and hang it somewhere it can dry fully. The thing that shortens a loofah's life is staying wet — left in a puddle in the corner of the bath it will go soft and start to smell within a fortnight. Hung up with air around it, it will outlast several plastic sponges.

### Is a loofah better than a plastic bath sponge?

For most people, yes, on three counts: it dries out between uses so it does not sour, it makes a bar of soap go much further, and it composts instead of shedding microplastic into the water and then sitting in landfill. The one thing a synthetic sponge does better is stay soft when dry — a loofah is stiff until it meets warm water.
